Udawalawe National Park

Udawalwe national park is the best place in Sri Lanka to spot large heads of wild elephants. But you also can see wild buffalos, samba dears, leopards and few other mammals in this park. The recorded number of mammals in Udawalawe national park is 43. 184 bird species also recorded in this park. 33 of them are migrant species.

The park lies in an area of 308 sq-km just above the Walawe Reservoir. Udawalawe was declared a national park in 1972. Previously, it was utilized by farmers for slash & burn cultivation. Annual rainfall is around 1,500 millimeters and the temperature is between 27-28 Celsius.
